Born Cambridge 20 Sept 47. Father Malcolm Macleod Nicolson, mother Phyllis Nicolson (née Lockett). MMN (Trinity College) was doing a PhD in Physics at the Cavendish, PN (Girton) was doing post-doctoral research, also at the Cavendish (both had previous degrees from Manchester University).

Moved to Leeds c Jan 1950; MMN appointed Lecturer in Physics at the University of Leeds. Lived at the Dingle, Outwood Lane, Horsforth; attended Featherbank Primary school. 5 Feb 1950: Roderick Ian Nicolson born.

Christmas 51: MMN died in accident at Newlay Railway Station (near Horsforth). PN took over his lectureship.

Summer 55. Mother PN married Dr Malcolm McCaig, of 121 Ringinglow Rd, S11, also a physicist (worked at Permanent Magnet Association, Brown St, S1); acquired step-brother Ian McCaig (b Feb 46). May 57: Andrew Malcolm McCaig born.

55-59: Ecclesall Infants, then Ecclesall Juniors.

59-66: King Edward VII School Sheffield. Photos.

66-70: St John's College Cambridge. Did Maths degree, then Maths Part III (post-grad). Played football.

(Both RIN and AMM followed the same route to St John's, where both stayed on to do PhDs)

70-74: Imperial College, London; PhD in Algebra. Played for Sidonians (Univ of London 2nd XI); squad 71-72.

74-76: Returned to Cambridge; supervised in Maths for various colleges.

76-78: Lecturer in Pure Maths, University of Rhodesia.

78-80: Senior Lecturer in Pure Maths, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Photo.

80-94: Senior Lecturer in Pure Maths, University of Malawi.

Aug 86: married Alice Mwalwanda

94-97: returned to Sheffield, worked part-time as web manager for Psy Dept, Unisheff. Children went to Mushroom Lane Nursery and then Lydgate Infants/Junior.

97-99: Alice finished OU degree and PGCE at Sheffield Hallam Uni.

99-02: Milton Keynes: Alice teaching RE at Radcliffe School and then Daventry William Parker school.

02-07: Alice Head of RE and Head of Year at Myers Grove 11-16 Comp, Sheffield; living in Eckington; 5 children at Eckington Comp.

07 to date: Alice Head of Humanities at the De Warenne Academy, Conisbrough.
